Blue and Gold Bomber Destroys Competition From Long Range At Final 4

April 3, 2008
by Amanda Preston

Darnell Harris Wins 3-Point Competition at Final 4.

Darnell Harris, the career LaSalle, Atlantic 10 and Big 5 leader in made 3-pointers won the 3-point shooting competition in San Antonio Texas as seen on ESPN nationally. Darnell beat the best long range shooters including Tennessee guard Chris Lofton (3rd all-time in NCAA history) Michigan State’s Drew Neitzel, Butler’s A.J. Graves, Vanderbilt’s Shan Foster, Washington State’s Derrick Low, Dayton’s Brian Roberts and Utah State’s Jaycee Carroll.

Darnell is expected to play basketball professionally after finishing his La Salle career as the 16th highest scorer in LaSalle history with 1,631 points.

Explorers Sloppiness Hurts Bad As Owls Advance and Explorers' Season Ends

March 14, 2008
by Jack

Critical Errors Down Stretch Costs Chance For Advancement; The Future is Bright.

The Explorers (15-17) threw away a golden opportunity to advance. The Temple Owls took advantage of key Explorers mistakes in the final 2 minutes as the Blue and Gold fall 84-75.

The Explorers started extremely slow and Temple led 9-0 before Yves Mbala (16 points) opened the scoring for LaSalle 4 minutes into the game. The Explorers played almost no defense in the first half and were fortunate to trail at the half only by 8 points at 43-35.

The second half saw the Explorers take their first lead at 62-61 on a Rodney Green (20 points, 4 boards and 7 assists) trey with 9 minutes to go. The Explorers continued to battle and it appeared that the Owls were done when Darnell Harris (18 points) hit a trey for a 75-73 Explorer lead with 2:13 remaining. Temple's Olmos was given a continuation play on a foul with 1:57 left but was unable to convert the free throw. The game was tied at 75 and the Blue and Gold Bomber (Harris) had the game winner rim out and then Yves made a poor decision and fouled Clark of Temple to change the game in Temple's favor. Yves then travelled on the next possession and Clark connected on a very lucky 3-pointer that hit the back rim, went through and sealed the win for Temple. Temple 84, LaSalle 75 FINAL.

The Explorers finished well above anyone's pre-season expectations by finishing 7th in the conference where they were picked to finish 13th. The coaches deserve a ton of credit for getting the program turned in the right direction. A solid point guard is a must in the spring recruiting period. With the additions of Vernon Goodridge and David Baroum to go with the one or two more spring recruits should propel the Explorers into the top tier of the A10 next season.

Officials: Frank Scagliotta, Kevin O'Connell and William Bush.

Grade for Officials: D

Frank Scagliotta gets a "F" for watching the Explorers like a hawk and allowing Temple inside players to get away with obvious contact that must be called. He was warned at half-time by an A10 officiating observer. O'Connell and Bush earn a "D".

Explorers Discover Victory Over Dukes in First Round of A10 Tourney

March 13, 2008
by Jack

Despite Free Throw Woes and Defensive Problems The Explorers Find a Way to Win.

The Explorers (15-16) found a way to scratch out another victory in their quest to grab an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament. The Duquesne Dukes (17-13) battled wit the Explorers to a 39-36 Explorer advantage at the break.

The second half was very entertaining as both teams battled until the very end. Duquesne built a 72-65 lead with about 6 minutes to go but the Explorers wanted to play another day so they fought back. La Salle used 9-2 run to tie the game at 74 on a shot in the lane by Jerrell Williams (10 points, 7 boards) with 2:36 remaining. The Dukes then built a 79-76 lead but the Explorers were not finished. Darnell Harris (21 points) hit a 3-pointer well beyond NBA distance to tie the game at 79 with less then a minute to go. Later on Rodney Green (18 points, 9 boards) hit an important free throw and then Ruben Guillandeaux (4 points in 12 minutes) nailed two free throws with 13 seconds left to seal the game as the Dukes missed a desperation 3-point attempt. LaSalle 82, Duquesne 79 FINAL.

The Explorers can exact revenge against Fran Dunphy and Temple but will need to play more focused then they did against Duquesne. Game time is 6:30 tonight.

Officials: Paul Faia, Mike Roberts and Kevin O'Connell.

Grade for Officials: C

The crew gave Duquesne some questionable first half calls but overall did an average job.

LaSalle Ends Up With 7th Seed for A10 Tourney

Despite 2 Dreadful Games to End Regular Season LaSalle Will Host Duquesne in First Round on Wednesday. Explorers Prove A10 Coaches and So-called "Experts" Wrong.

The Explorers (14-16, 8-8) finished above Dayton in the standings due to head-to-head match-up. The Atlantic 10 coaches incorrectly picked the Explorers for 13th place in the pre-season. They will face 10th place Duquesne at 6:30pm on Wednesday in an opening round matchup. The Explorers split the regular season with the Dukes at 1-1. A 6:30 pm re-match with Temple (2nd place) awaits on Thursday if the Explorers are victorious. I was selected to write this article since I was the only contributor to this site (or anywhere in Explorers Universe for that matter) to predict a 7th place finish. Additional info.

Explorers Stink Up Gola Arena As Owls Take 2nd Place and Big 5 Championship Share

March 8, 2008
by Jack

Another Disgraceful Effort From Coaching To Execution Eliminates Bye Possibility for A10 Playoffs.

The Explorers (14-16, 8-8 in A-10) ended the regular season on a disappointing note. They lost to Temple (18-12, 11-5) and allowed the Owls to control play throughout the game on Senior day. LaSalle's Darnell Harris (26 points on 4 for 11 three-point shooting) and Sherm Diaz (4 points in 24 minutes) were unable to enjoy their day as the team fell behind early and ended a disappointing and embarrassing first half trailing 50-26.

The second half saw the Explorers start on a 9-0 run but it mattered little as the team had allowed Temple to build too large of a lead in the first half. Darnell, Yves, Sherm, PJ, Rodney, and Ruben played well during stretches but their ineffective defense killed them down the stretch. Temple 85, LaSalle 66 FINAL.

The Explorers have to wait for their seed to be announced after tonight's games are played.

Officials: D.J. Carstensen, Gary Fraser and Rudy Seneca.

Grade for Officials: F

This crew gave Temple a ton of confidence in the first half by allowing them to get away with push-offs and contacts while whistling the Explorers for touch fouls. The A10 will clean house this off-season or the FBI and NCAA will force them too. Another disgraceful officiating performance.

Explorers Surrender Immediately to UMass Instead of Fighting For Bye

March 5, 2008
by Jack

A Disgraceful Effort From Coaching To Execution Jeopardizes A Bye Opportunity in A10 Playoffs.

The Explorers (14-15, 8-7 in A-10, in 6th place down from tie for 4th) led 2-0 but never showed much life after that as Massachusetts Minutemen (20-9, 9-6) took advantage of lethargic Explorer play. LaSalle's lack of effort and poor coaching decisions is difficult to understand since the team was supposed to come out on fire and show that they are making a serious attempt for the post-season (NCAA or NIT) but instead they looked like a team playing out the string. Darnell Harris (13 points mostly in garbage time) and Rodney Green (12 points, took himself out of the game with 2 quick early fouls) were non-factors in the critical first half of action and LaSalle trailed at the break 39-19.

The second half got really ugly and coach John Giannini showed no passion or fire as he did not even pick-up the mandatory technical to show his team that he was very angry and upset. Instead the Explorers allowed UMass to reach triple digits. Everyone on this team should be embarrased and that includes the entire coaching staff. The Gola Arena fans will not tolerate anything short of a win over Fran Dunphy and Temple on Saturday. Darnell, Sherm, PJ, Rodney, Kimmani and Ruben had all better realize that now is the time to step up or otherwise the season will end very soon
. UMass 100, LaSalle 63 FINAL.

The Explorers will now need help to finish in the top 4 as they can no longer finish in second place. When Darnell, Ruben Guillandeaux (zero points in 23 minutes) and Rodney were needed most, they came up very tiny... that cannot happen again if this team expects to win. Darnell tied the Atlantic 10 record for 3-pointers made in a career but after tonight's embarrassing loss not too many care about that including Darnell.

Up next on Saturday: the Explorers celebrate Senior day against Temple as this will be the last home game for Darnell Harris and Sherm Diaz. The Explorers need to win to claim a share of the Big 5 title. Start time is 4pm.

Officials: Jeff Clark, D.J. Carstensen and Jeff Janosik.
Grade for Officials: C

This crew made mistakes against both teams but nothing out of the ordinary.

Rams Prove Toughness As Explorers Fail To Play Disciplined Defense

March 1, 2008
by Jack

The Rhode Island Rams Benefited From Undisciplined Defense and Officiating Calls.

The game started out well for the Explorers (14-14, 8-6 in A-10, in tie for 4th with Massachusetts and Richmond) but Rhode Island (21-9, 7-8) benefited from poor Explorer defense and enough officiating calls to beat the Explorers. LaSalle built leads of 18-10 and 29-22 but lack of discipline on the defensive end and at least 4 critical non-calls against Rhode Island (for a couple of travels and a lane violation not called at the end of the first half despite fans counting to 7 seconds outloud and detectable on broadcast) saw the Explorers trailing at the break 44-43.

In the second half the Explorers allowed way too many uncontested jumpers especially from Rhode Island's main threat Jimmy Baron. In fact, the Explorers allowed Rhodey to control the glass and gave them far too many easy layups in the second half. Darnell Harris (18 points) and Ruben Guillandeaux (18 points, 3 assists) led the Explorers attack. The Explorers battled all the way back to tie the game at 81 with 2:40 remaining but their lack of discipline on defense hurt as Rhodey connected on a deep trey immediately after that and the Explorers never were able to overcome that. It was disappointing to see Rodney Green (14 points in 24 minutes) have trouble with his injured ankle and unable to play the last few minutes. The Explorers had their opportunities but were unable to seize control of this game. Rhode Island 91, LaSalle 85 FINAL.

The LaSalle community is blessed to have a dedicated SID in Kale Beers. One of our colleagues recently had the opportunity to share a few minutes at the Ugly Moose with Kale Beers. Beers is so excited about this year and next year and that is so obvious during his broadcasts.

Up next on Wednesday the Explorers travel to UMass for a critical 7pm matchup.

Officials: Joseph Demayo, Ron Tyburski and John Gwynn.
Grade for Officials: D

This crew did not call the game appropriately as Rhodey was not called for travelling on several obvious occasions and the Rams capitalized on this by scoring critical points on most of these. The crew also missed several hard contact fouls by the Rams against Kimmani Barrett. Hopefully the A10 sent an officiating observer to this game.

Explorers Clinch A10 Playoff Berth After Battering Rams in Final 3 Minutes

February 27, 2008
by BK Seginsda

The Road Warrior Explorers Win 5th Straight By Turning Up Attack in Last Few Minutes.

The Explorers (14-13, 8-5 in A-10, remain tied for 3rd with Temple and Richmond) are officially hot after defeating the Fordham Rams (11-14, 5-8). Jerrell Williams (14 points, 4 rebounds) got off to a quick start with four quick buckets to help build a 13-9 Explorer lead. There were some spectacular plays in the first half including an alley-oop from Rodney Green to Terrell Williams (2 points in 8 minutes) for a 21-13 Explorer advantage. The Explorers built a 23-13 lead and Fordham's coach Dereck Whittenburg did not like it and it earned him a technical foul. However, this benefited Fordham as the officiating crew gave Fordham all but a few calls the remainder of the half. Darnell Harris was unable to score in the half as he was heavily guarded. The Explorers were trailing 45-42 but Green (19 points, 6 grabs) connected on a trey with 2 seconds left and the teams were tied at 45 for the half.

The second half started much like the first half played out with each team taking the lead until Fordham hit a trey for a 67-62 lead with 6:43 remaining. The Rams built a 75-71 lead with 3:45 remaining. A10 Player of the Week Darnell Harris (6 points, 2 assists) then hit a jumper with 3:23 left to cut the lead to 75-73. Green hit 2 free throws to tie the game before Darnell delivered the dagger with a trey that barely tingled the twine for a 78-75 advantage at 2:14. The Rams only points in the last 3:44 of the game were a meaningless trey with 2 seconds left. The Explorers hit their free throws down the stretch and clinched a berth in the A10 playoffs. LaSalle 83, Fordham 78 FINAL.

Ruben Guillandeaux (15 points on 11 of 14 free throws), Kimmani Barrett (10 points), Yves Mbala (9 points, 5 boards) and Paul Johnson (8 points, 6 boards) all gave solid effort.

Up next on Saturday is Rhode Island at Tom Gola Arena with a 2pm start. Get there early as this will likely be a sell-out.

Officials: Eric Anderson, Paul Faia and Mike Roberts.
Grade for Officials: F

This crew was apologizing to Whittenburg after giving him an early technical by really hammering the Explorers with fouls or calls in Fordham's favor the remainder of the first half. They called the game more evenly in the second half but were "whistle happy" as little touches by guards were called but forwards were permitted to push anyone they chose in the paint. This was definitely a bad effort from the officials.

Explorers Prevail Against Dukes to Move Closer to Bye for A10 Playoffs

February 24, 2008
by BK Seginsda

Explorers Out-hustled Duquesne and Overcame Bad Officiating for 4th Straight Victory.

The LaSalle Explorers (13-13, 7-5 in A-10, tied for 3rd at the end of this game) have clawed their way to the top portion of the Atlantic 10 standings with only first place out of reach. The Duquesne Dukes (16-10, 6-7) never gave up in the second half but, even with the aid of a few officiating calls, were unable to beat the Explorers. LaSalle trailed early as they played into Duquesne's strength by playing man-to-man instead of zone as the Dukes built a 24-16 lead. The Explorers then switched to a zone defense and finished the half strongly as Ruben Guillandeaux (13 first half points and 17 for the game) carried the team as he drilled a trey with 1:50 remaining for a 39-31 Explorer advantage. It was 41-34 at the half.

An unbelievable Explorer run opened the second half as the Explorers built a 50-38 lead with Jerrell Williams make a spin move and the layup. However, this somehow motivated the Dukes who came all the way back to tie the score at 52. Ruben made a clutch layup for a 54-52 lead with under 12 minutes to go. A10 Player of the Week Darnell Harris (18 points) came to life with the score tied at 54 as he made his first trey of the game for a 57-54 lead. Then he drilled a trey and followed it up with a soft runner to give the Explorers a 62-55 lead. And then later he hit a deep trey for a 67-59 lead. The final minute was painful to watch as Rodney Green (6 points) grabbed a Duquesne miss and was clearly slapped and fouled by a Duquesne player with LaSalle ahead 73-69. The refs called "jump ball" so fortunately the possession arrow favored LaSalle. The next sequence of events should trigger an investigation for attempting to fix the game. Harris was clearly knocked to to the floor while attempting to gather an in-bounds pass with 30 seconds to remaining but instead Duquesne ended up with the ball. Then the Explorers' Guillandeaux made a clean block on a 3-point attempt by a Dukes player and the ball went out of bounds. Everyone in the arena was expected an in-bounds for the Dukes but instead ref Roger Ayer decided it would be 3 shots at the line for the Dukes which they converted to make it a one possession game at 73-72. Then with 16.4 seconds Darnell Harris was fouled and converted both ends of the one-and-one. The Dukes failed on their final 3-point attempt. LaSalle 75, Duquesne 72 FINAL.

Yves Mbala (9 points and 10 boards) and Paul Johnson (8 points and 7 grabs) both played key parts in the victory. If Saint Joe's loses to Rhode Island the Explorers will be tied for second place in the A10.

Up next on Wednesday is at Fordham with an 8pm start.

Officials: Mike Eades, Roger Ayer, John Gaffney
Grade for Officials: F

These corrupt officials did everything in their power to give the Dukes the game. They sent the Dukes to the line 25 times compared to only 7 for LaSalle. They made a few incorrect calls on balls that were knocked out-of-bounds and a totally bogus call on Green who was whistled for his third foul only after a Dukes player grabbed his face - several seconds after the play ended. The entire crew including the chief Mike Eades receives an "F" for their one-sided effort.

The Agony of Victory - Explorers Shoot Down Flyers in Overtime
February 21, 2008
by Jack

The Explorers Agonized The Gola Arena Faithful Until The Very End of Regulation and Overtime But Recovered to Win.

The Blue and Gold (12-13, 6-5 in A-10) barely had enough to get by the Dayton Flyers (17-8, 5-7) in an unforgettable game at Gola Arena. The Explorers did not make this one easy on themselves. They built leads of 5-0 and 14-8 but then played slop-ball like they did early in the season. Dayton went on a 13-1 run to lead 21-15. Darnell Harris (26 points) then hit a jumper to bring back some life into the Explorers but they trailed at the break 30-21.

The second half was getting ugly as Dayton led 65-58 and it looked very bleak until Rodney Green (17 points) made a key jumper at 2:54 to cut it to 65-60. Paul Johnson (11 points, 11 grabs and 3 assists) made the plays that mattered most down the stretch. He drew a charge with 1:23 left. Green made another good play by striping the ball away and getting a layup to cut it to 65-62. Yves Mbala (14 points) took an ill-advised 3-point attempt that hit wildly off the backboard and Johnson grabbed it and called a time-out with 9 seconds remaining. The in-bounds pass came to a wide-open Sherm Diaz (7 points), a designed play, who drilled a trey with 6 seconds left to tie the score at 65. Dayton missed on their final attempt and onto a 5 minute overtime.

In the overtime it was all Dayton for the first 4 minutes as probable A10 Player of the Year Brian Roberts (30 points, 6 assists) drilled a 3-pointer for a 78-73 Dayton lead with 53 seconds left. SID and broadcast announcer Kale Beers threw in the towel on the broadcast but the Explorers did not. Then Darnell took over as he hit a trey to bring the Explorers within 2 at 78-76. Roberts got fouled and missed the front-end of a 1-and-1. Harris drilled another trey with 13.5 seconds left for a 79-78 Explorer advantage. After Dayton missed they fouled Mbala who converted both free throws for an 81-78 lead. Roberts missed Dayton's final attempt.
The Explorers are now in 5th place in the A10 standings. LaSalle 81, Dayton 78 FINAL.

Coach John Giannini deserves credit for walking out of the huddle and taking his coaches with him and told the upperclassmen "you figure out what you have to do to win this game." Whatever Darnell, Sherm and Paul told their teammates certainly worked.

Up next on Sunday is at Duquesne 2pm for a revenge game.

Officials: Robert Donato, Frank Scagliotta and Gene Steratore.
Grade for Officials: C

Frank Scagliotta has received warnings from both the A10 and NCAA this year. He must have listened as he did not make his typical bizarre calls that have cost the Explorers home victories previously. He earned a "C" as did the controversial Robert Donato (see Villanova at Georgetown) and Steratore.

Rodney Green Is Carried Around Palestra By Students
Giannini and Explorers Beat Martelli and Hawks in Big 5 Battle.

The Explorers (11-13, 5-5 in A-10, 2-1 in Big 5) beat the Saint Joe's Hawks (16-8, 7-4, 2-1) in one of the best Big 5 battles ever at the Palestra. The Hawks built a 24-13 lead. However, the Explorers battled back for a tie at 34 on a Ruben Guillandeaux (16 points on 6 for 7 shooting and 2 assists in 15 minutes) trey. Darnell Harris (21 points and 4 assists) broke the 3-point LaSalle record with his 309th trey at 4:01 left to bring the Explorers within a point, 41-40. The Explorers trailed at the half 50-46.

The maturity and pose that the Explorers showed in the second half was impressive. Kimmani Barrett (12 points, 4 boards) was fouled and goal-tended on the same play and his old-fashioned 3-pointer gave the Explorers a 64-62 lead at 14:36. Rodney Green (9 points, 6 boards) came up huge in the final 3 minutes. Rodney made the block, the steal and was fouled on his way to the hoop with 2:39 left. He made 2 free throws and then stole the ball that lead to one of two free throw makes by Yves Mbala (17 points) for an 86-83 lead. Then with the score tied at 86, Green powered his way through the lane to slam home a dunk on a missed shot for an 88-86 lead. After Harris missed the front-end of a 1-and-1 with 9.3 seconds remaining and the Explorers holding a 90-89 lead, Rodney again made the steal and called a timeout with 1.4 seconds remaining. He was fouled with 1 second remaining. Rodney missed the first attempt and then his uncertainty on whether or not to miss the second forced a turnover. The Hawks were awarded the ball but were unable to convert as time ran out. The Explorers Entourage (students in Gold shirts) stormed the court and carried Rodney on their shoulders. It was truly a happy Presidents' Day for the Explorers. LaSalle 90, Saint Joe's 89 FINAL. Video Highlight

Coach John Giannini deserves high praise for beating the heavily favored Hawks. After the game he said "this is a great win for LaSalle. This can be attributed to the fact we are becoming a better passing team; more passes equals better shots."

Other post game comments...
To get this win is the best feeling I have had at LaSalle - Darnell Harris.

Paul Johnson

Joe Lindsay gets a "D" for bad call on Johnson with 13:24 left and for not slapping Pat Calathes of Saint Joe's with a technical in the second half for spiking the ball into the Hawks student section right in front of him with around 9 minutes to go and the Hawks ahead 78-73. Calathes was warned in the first half by ref Pat Driscoll (earns a "C") for knocking the ball into the LaSalle student section. Earl Walton also earns a "C".

Explorers Match Win Total From Last Year - Get Ready For Monday Showdown Against The Hawks.

The LaSalle Explorers (10-13, 4-5 in A-10) finished their out-of-conference schedule by demolishing the New Jersey Institute of Technology Highlanders (0-26) at Gola Arena. LaSalle saw Kimmani Barrett have a huge first half with 10 points, 3 rebounds and an assist. Paul Johnson (11 points for the game) also contributed in building a 46-30 halftime lead.

In the second half LaSalle opened up a 69-44 lead with Terrell Williams throwing down 2 straight jams. Darnell Harris (13 points in 23 minutes) witnessed most of the second half from the bench so he can rest for the Monday tilt against the Hawks. Sherm Diaz was given 18 minutes and contributed 10 points and 6 blocks. Rodney Green had 14 points for the game. It could prove to be a wise scheduling move prior to the game against Saint Joe's on Presidents' Day. LaSalle 87, NJIT 65 FINAL.

The Explorers play the Hawks at the Palestra on Monday (8 pm start) and indications are the students will be there in huge numbers with roll-outs. Coach John Giannini has been working on a game plan to shut down the Hawks leading scorer Pat Calathes. The time is now to defeat Martelli and the Hawks; the Explorers must play focused in order to accomplish this.

Officials: John Hughes, Bill McCarthy and Wally Rutecki.

I was watching the Penn-Princeton game on tv last night and the announcers said that the refs were awful (52 fouls called) as they decided the outcome of that game with a late technical. Two of those refs were at Gola Arena officiating tonight's contest; the pathetic John Hughes and Bill McCarthy. The whistle-happy crew went nuts in this contest also as the called 51 fouls (26 on LaSalle). Hughes gets an "F" for creating calls only he sees - he gave an NJIT player free throws when he was clearly not in the act of shooting. The other 2 get a "D".

Explorers MIA As Dukes Deliver KO
February 9, 2008

Frustrated Fans At Gola Watch Painful Effort By Home Team.

The LaSalle Explorers (9-13, 4-5 in A-10) continue to play without passion and confidence at Gola Arena. Instead we witnessed a slow defensive start combined with an offense that had no rhythm as the Duquesne Dukes (15-7, 5-4) were allowed to gain access to the basket right down the lane and they built 10 point leads throughout the half. The Explorers battled to tie the game at 35 on a jump hook by Jerrell Williams (11 points and 9 boards) but then allowed the Dukes to close the half on a 10-2 run to finish with a 45-37 score.

The second half was not much better defensively for the Explorers as the allowed the Dukes to get the majority of their points in the paint. Darnell Harris (14 points) had a rough start but he connected on 2 straight 3-pointers to pull the Explorers within two at 65-63. However, with all the momentum and the crowd on their side they completely stopped playing defense and allowed Duquesne to hit 3 consecutive treys to put the Explorers in a major hole at 74-63. Rodney Green (24 points) continued to play hard and kept the Explorers close but missed a few easy baskets in the second half. Paul Johnson played extremely well in the first half as he had 13 points in the opening 20 minutes but disappeared in the second half by scoring a single point for 14 total. Duquesne 101, LaSalle 84 FINAL.

The Explorers play NJ Institute of Technology on Wednesday at 7pm in Gola Arena. This wraps up the easier part of the schedule.

Officials: Kevin O'Connell, Mike Foote and Rudy Seneca.
Grade for Officials: F

The NCAA is finally addressing the awful officiating and sent observers to this game. What they witnessed was some of the worst officiating ever at this level of basketball. The FBI will not get involved unless the NCAA reports the activity as "suspicious" and "consistent" behavior of officials for possible fixing of games. The NCAA officials also said it will suggest removing poor performing officials from Division One games which is the category this crew falls into. They made horrible and outrageous calls against both teams but the majority of bad calls favored the Dukes. Examples: 1. a 5 second call on an Explorers inbound that was less then 3 seconds; 2. a ball the Dukes threw out of bounds 20 feet above the reach of any Explorer yet they said an Explorer touched the ball before it went out of bounds; 3. Harris had a clean block in the lane but instead was whistled for a foul; 4. a Dukes player ran over Sherm Diaz but instead of a foul he called "jump ball"; 5. Reggie Jackson of the Dukes grabbed and pulled Darnell Harris' jersey and no call was made; 6. Darryl Partin had the ball taken away but it should have been called a reach-in foul on the Dukes; 7. Diaz received a fore-arm to the face and nothing was called. 8. Jerrell Williams touched the ball last out of bounds but the Explorers were awarded the inbounds. Those were just some of the incorrect calls in the first half!

LaSalle (8-12, 3-4 in A-10) gave the 15th ranked Xavier Musketeers (18-4, 6-1) a tough fight for most of the game. LaSalle silenced the "Uniform" Center folks by holding the lead 21-19 with under 10 minutes left in the half. The Explorers finished the half trailing 37-30.

As the second half opened the Explorers allowed too many rebounds and it became difficult for them to recover. Rodney Green (18 points and 3 assists) was the star for the Explorers. Yves Mbala had a double-double with 13 points and 11 boards. Jerrell Williams contributed with 16 points and 7 boards. Xavier 75, LaSalle 62 FINAL.

The Explorers travel to D.C. to play George Washington on Wednesday at 7pm.

Explorers Long Distance Plan Gives the Bonnies Fits

Explorers Convert 16 Treys In Rout of Bonnies.

The Blue and Gold (8-11, 3-3 in A-10) finally make Gola Arena a home court advantage as they torched the Saint Bonaventure Bonnies (6-14, 0-6) 84-61 as Darnell Harris (23 points for the game) put on a 3-point shooting clinic by making 7 of 7 treys in the first half. The win matches the Explorers A10 win total from last season and brings them to the middle tier of the standings. The Bonnies remain winless on the road this season. The Explorers ended the half with a buzzer beating trey by Harris for a 50-33 lead.

In the second half the Explorers relaxed a bit offensively after building a 72-46 lead on a Rodney Green (11 points and 8 assists) trey. Paul Johnson was able to contribute with 16 points and 7 boards in 26 minutes. Kimmani Barrett played well as he chipped in 10 points and 5 boards. La Salle 84, Saint Bonaventure 61 FINAL.

The Explorers travel to Cincinnati to play Xavier on Saturday at 7pm. The Explorers are a much better road team this year and could knock off the 15th ranked Muskies with a focused effort meaning no unforced turnovers.

CSTV should be refunding anyone who paid the $9.95 for the Saint Louis game as this was a mistake to charge the monthly subscribers according to Kale Beers.

Bills Cash-In on Explorers Mistakes

Another Disturbing Home Loss to Lowly Saint Louis.

The Explorers (7-11, 2-3 in A-10) are disrespecting Gola Arena as they are not playing inspired and confident basketball. The latest loss is to the lowly Saint Louis Billikens (11-8, 2-3) who picked up their first road win of the year. Saint Louis scored a total of 20 points in one of their games not too long ago! The Explorers trailed 38-35 at the break.

The second half saw the Explorers start out well as reserve guard Darryl Partin (6 points in 8 minutes) surprised everyone with two 3-pointers to give LaSalle a 60-58 lead. However, the disturbing trend at home continued as the Explorers failed to play the clamp down defense we have seen them play on the road. Rodney Green (6 points, 6 boards and 6 assists) continued his scoring slump (2 for 9 on field goals) and is not progressing as the Explorers need him to. Jerrell Williams had another double-double (14 points, 11 boards) but still makes too many mental mistakes (shuffling his feet and shooting too early at the end of the half). Yves Mbala was the star for the Explorers as he had 18 points and 4 rebounds in his 34 minutes. Darnell Harris (13 points on 5 for 11 shooting) missed 3-pointers at key junctures that gave Saint Louis all the momentum they needed. Saint Louis 81, La Salle 74 FINAL.

Saint Bonaventure visits Gola Arena on Wednesday at 7pm.

We received word from many alums that the All-Access CSTV webcasts that requires a monthly fee does not include all the games!!! CSTV refused to connect the monthly subscribers for this game and instead demanded an additional $9.95 for this game alone! Only problem is that this is false advertising since the La Salle commercials and all communication from LaSalle and Kale Beers indicated that all of the games were included in the package. Kale said during the broadcast that he was unaware of CSTV attempting to squeeze additional money from subscribers. CSTV never bothered to let our SID, Kale Beers, or anyone associated with LaSalle about this! Call 1-888-870-CSTV to lodge your complaint. This just goes to show how unprofessional and slimey CSTV is.

These officials called the game as it played out. Saint Louis only shot 2 free throws before the closing minutes because that was all that they had earned. The Explorers failed to capitalize on the early foul bonus that Saint Louis got into in the second half.

Explorers Disrespect Home Court Advantage in Loss to Charlotte
January 23, 2008
by Jack

Shameful Effort; Bad Decisions and Unforced Turnovers Are Disturbing.

The Explorers (7-10, 2-2 in A-10) continue to play at Gola Arena as if it were a foreign court. They allowed the Charlotte 49ers (12-6, 3-1) to steal a game by making very bad decisions and turning the ball over. The team really needs to be evaluated as the Explorers were forcing 3-point attempts when they should have been feeding the ball inside (Charlotte was in the penalty situation early in the second half). The Explorers built a 40-37 halftime lead as Darnell Harris scored 9 points and Jerrell Williams added 8 points and 6 boards in the first half.

The second half was an Explorer slop-fest. Rodney Green (3 points, 4 boards in 19 minutes) was invisible most of the game. Jerrell Williams, a leading contender for A10 Rookie of the Year, had a very good game with 14 points and 11 rebounds. The Explorers held the 49ers leading scorer Leemire Goldwire to 18 points (2.6 points below his average) but allowed a few low-scoring players to beat them! Harris finished the game with only 14 points on just 11 shots. Yves Mbala (15 points, 4 boards in 34 minutes) had a good offensive game but negated that with 6 costly turnovers. Ruben Guillandeaux (15 points, 3 rebounds) also made some very poor decisions. Charlotte 84, La Salle 78 FINAL.

Freshman guard Kyle Griffin will miss up to 3 weeks with a knee injury. He hurt his knee at practice last Friday.

Saint Louis visits Gola Arena on Saturday at 2pm. If LaSalle plays like they did tonight then they will give the awful Billikens an opportunity to steal a win.

Officials: Frank Scagliotta, Brent Hampton and Kevin Ferguson.
Grade for Officials: C
This is another not so good crew with Ferguson getting a "B" and Scagliotta a "C" and Hampton a "D". Hampton made far too many calls against the Explorers including a bogus call against Yves Mbala for an over-the-back call that never happened. Hopefully the new A10 commish will boot Scagliotta (see previous games against LaSalle) and Hampton out of officiating A10 games.

Spiders Scrunched by Explorers Delivery Service

Ruben Guillandeaux Returns; Green and Harris Deliver.

LaSalle (7-9, 2-1 in A-10) revenged a triple overtime loss to the Richmond Spiders (9-7, 2-2) 10 days ago. The Explorers started the contest with high energy and built a 38-27 advantage although they went scoreless in the last 3 minutes of the half and were up 38-31 at the break. Ruben Guillandeaux had a solid first half as he contributed 9 points in the half. Darnell Harris paced the Explorers with 13 in the half.

The second half started out very sloppy for the Explorers as they turned the ball over time after time and allowed the Spiders back into the game. In fact Richmond took their first lead of the game at 55-54 with 7:49 left in the half. Then Rodney Green (16 points, 7 boards, 4 steals and 6 assists) got a great feed from Yves Mbala (8 points, 5 boards) and made the easy layup. The Explorers then took matters into their own shooting hands as Harris (24 points) nailed his sixth trey of the game and Paul Johnson (8 points) made a layup for a 64-57 advantage with 3:16 remaining. The Explorers closed out the game by making their free throws. Richmond coach Chris Mooney was whining to the officials most of the game. The Explorers made sure there would be no overtime in this game.

Guillandeaux contributed to the win and it is important for him to continue to progress after missing games earlier in the year due to injury. The Explorers won their third in a row and now open a 3 game homestand. La Salle 76, Richmond 67 FINAL.

The next 3 games are going to be a good test for the Explorers as they should now have the confidence to win all 3. The next game is Wednesday against Charlotte at 7pm.

Officials: Wally Rutecki, Larry Scirotto and Mike Foote
Grade for Officials: C
There was no consistency in the officiating as touch fouls were called sometimes when hard physical contact was not. But then it was. Mike Foote and Larry Scirotto earn a "C" as they did not allow Rutecki to ruin the game. Rutecki should be booted from officiating at this level.

Explorers Earn Big 5 Victory Over Quakers

LaSalle Wins at The Cathedral of College Basketball in Big 5 Matchup.

The Explorers (6-9) finally beat the Pennsylvania Quakers (5-10) at the Palestra - their first win there since 2000. The first half was not well played by the Explorers and they trailed at the break 29-24.

The second half started out not so well for the Explorers as they still trailed by 5 with 16:19 remaining. Then Rodney Green (17 points) stole the ball and slammed it home. This ignited an 11-0 Explorer run. Kimmani Barrett (15 points, 9 boards in 29 minutes) made important free throws and a layup to keep the Blue and Gold ahead. Jerrell Williams (10 points, 5 boards, 2 assists and 3 blocks in 24 minutes) fouled out with 3:24 remaining. Penn closed the deficit to 59-58 with 31 seconds remaining but Yves Mbala picked up his teammates and closed out the game with 3 clutch free throws in the final 20 seconds.

The impressive part of the victory was that Darnell Harris (4 points, 4 boards and 3 assists in 33 minutes) had a poor shooting performance (1 for 10 from the field) and others including Darryl Partin (5 points in 5 minutes) provided relief. La Salle 62, Pennsylvania 58 FINAL.

The Explorers must continue to build on the momentum and really play a full 40 minutes and put away the Spiders early on Saturday. The game starts at 4pm and is on cable tv (CSN-Philly).

Explorers Fight And Earn Victory Over Bonnies
January 12, 2008

Explorers Finally Able To Focus And Beat Inferior Opponent.

The Blue and Gold (5-9) finally beat an inferior opponent in the Saint Bonaventure Bonnies (6-10). They did it by not turning the ball over in the second half (only 2 second half turnovers). The team leaders put together solid games as Rodney Green (19 points, 7 boards and 5 assists in 35 minutes), Kimmani Barrett (17 points, 6 boards in 27 minutes), Jerrell Williams (15 points, 15 boards, 3 assists and 2 blocks in 31 minutes) and Darnell Harris (21 points in 38 minutes) all realized the sense of urgency that this game represented.

The first half was a major struggle as the Explorers closed the break trailing 38-26 and having 10 turnovers. It looked like the Explorers would not be able to overcome this double-digit deficit.

However, the second half was totally different. The Explorers played out of their minds defensively as they held the Bonnies to 23 total points in the half. They tied the game at 59 with 4:09 remaining. Harris hit a trey to give the Explorers their first lead of the second half at 62-59 at the 3:45 mark and held the Bonnies to 2 meaningless points the rest of the game. The Bonnies held a 9 point lead (58-49) with 8:45 remaining in the game. The Explorers closed out the game with a 23-3 run.
La Salle 72, Saint Bonaventure 61 FINAL

We need to see the Explorers build on this win and beat Penn on Tuesday.

Green Explorers Triple The Pain Of Allowing Spiders, Zebras and Poor Decisions Torture Them For 55 Minutes
January 9, 2008
by Jack

Triple Overtime Loss To Lowly Spiders Angers Explorer Faithful.

The Explorers (4-9) allowed the Richmond Spiders to remain close for 2 halves and 3 five minute overtimes and they paid dearly with a loss to open their Atlantic 10 season. The officials for some unknown reason kept giving warnings to Richmond's coach but never a technical foul; the same rule did not apply to LaSalle - more on that later. The loss could ultimately cost Athletic Director Tom Brennan his job as soon as this week as many alums were visibly and vocally upset by this loss. The expected trio of leaders Rodney Green (23 points in 52 minutes), Kimmani Barrett (6 points, 6 boards in 27 minutes) and Darnell Harris (21 points and 4 rebounds in 51 minutes) have not come through in the clutch and it has had a devastating affect on the team.

The first half was ugly for the Explorers as they allowed Richmond to build a 7-1 lead with 15:51 left before Harris hit a trey. Richmond's coach Chris Mooney was consistently complaining to the refs the entire half. Richmond incredibly closed out the half with a 29-17 lead.

In the second half the Explorers spent most of the time playing catch-up. Mooney was granted immunity by the refs but LaSalle's Green was not so fortunate as he was immediately slapped with a technical for mildly complaining to the officials about a missed call against him. Then, with under 1 minute to go Harris was fouled while attempting a trey. He missed the shot and only converted 2 of the 3 foul shots. Mooney was off the bench and walking on the court screaming at the officials. He was warned at least 3 times previous to this by the officials. No technical foul was called and he was given another meaningless warning! Next, with 21.5 seconds remaining in regulation, Richmond's Dan Geriot decides to grab the Explorers Green around the neck and drag him to the floor. Ref Paul Faia whistles Green for the foul and awards Geriot 2 foul shots. Geriot converts both foul shots to send the game into overtime tied at 57 after Harris missed an ill-advised 3-point attempt.

Then the overtime began and the Explorers foolishly took three 3-point attempts (as they collected 2 offensive boards) in their first possession. Green missed 2 critical free throws. The score was tied at 62 when the Explorers were correctly awarded the basketball with 2.3 seconds remaining. Mooney again jumped from the bench and complained to the officials - he received just another warning! Paul Johnson (3 points, 7 boards in 35 minutes) missed the final shot and it was on to a second overtime.

In the second overtime Kyle Griffin (6 points in 30 minutes) hit a clutch trey to tie the score at 68. It ended with that tie score so a third overtime was required and Mooney was still openly complaining to the officials.

In the third overtime Green had a chance to win the game with 12 seconds remaining but missed. The ensuing scramble gave the Explorers the possession on the jump ball call. Mooney was again openly complaining and was given another meaningless warning. Griffin attempted a 3-pointer when only a two point hoop was needed. His shot missed. Game over. Richmond 75, La Salle 74, 3 OT FINAL

Some questions about coaching decisions need to be asked.
1. Why was 2-time ROW Jerrell Williams (2 points, 6 boards) only given 15 minutes?
2. Why were the Explorers attempting so many 3-pointers when situations did not call for it?
3. Why didn't Explorers coach John Giannini demand that the officials put a stop to Mooney's antics in the first half?
4. Why does the team still miss critical free throws?
5. How does the team continue to have over a dozen unforced turnovers every game?
6. Who gives the green light for Sherm Diaz and Yves Mbala (both 0 for 1) to take 3-point attempts?
7. What is wrong with point guard Ruben Guillandeaux who only played 3 minutes?
8. Should AD Brennan lose his job after this loss?

The Explorers travel to Saint Bonaventure on Saturday.

Explorers Fail To Hold Off Seminoles
January 5, 2008
by Jack

Explorers Hold Late Second Half Lead Before Turning Over Game.

LaSalle (4-8) had the opportunity to get a win against a depleted ACC team but were denied by their own carelessness in the final three minutes of the game. The Explorers battled in the first half and took several leads but ended the half trailing the Florida State Seminoles (12-4) 39-38 as Rodney Green (11 points in the half) scored on a buzzer beating layup.

The second half started out well for the Explorers as they built a 9 point lead at 65-56 with 7:13 remaining and it appeared as if the Seminoles were tired and beaten. Florida State then went on a 7-0 run that was answered by a Kyle Griffin (8 points in 22 minutes) trey with 4:55 left to give the Explorers a 68-63 lead. No lead is safe and the Seminoles scored the next 6 points. Jerrell Williams (12 points, 14 boards and a blocked shot) made one of two free-throws to tie the score 69 each at the 2:15 mark. The Explorers then played careless basketball the rest of the game and it cost them a victory. Missed free throws (7 for the game) and unforced turnovers are again a major concern. What is the cause for this lack of focus and concentration?

Darnell Harris (13 points - only 4 in the second half) needs to take more second half shots. Kimmani Barrett (8 points, 2 boards) only saw 17 minutes. Florida State 81, LaSalle 76 FINAL.

The Explorers get ready for a 12 noon game Wednesday to open A10 play against Richmond - hopefully the refs will be there on-time.

Explorers Should Request FBI Investigation Into Officials Fixing Game For Wildcats
December 29, 2007
by BK Seginsda

The Explorers Are Expected To Hand Over Game Tape To FBI Linking Former NBA Ref Tim Donaghy To Frank Scagliotta And 2 Others.

The Explorers (4-7) were robbed of any opportunity to win the game by three men calling themselves officials. The crew allowed the 16th ranked Villanova Wildcats (10-1) to get away with push-offs, travels and even aggressive hand checks. Jay Wright was bitching and moaning to the refs all night even when he had a 12 point lead and no technicals were called against him! Sources indicate that they were told to ensure a Villanova victory.

Ruben Guillandeaux passes the ball as 2 officials and Wright look on.

No one knows if the Explorers could have pulled off the upset as the refs made calls to make sure that Villanova maintained a double-digit lead throughout the second half. John Giannini has to get fired up at the poor officiating in order to motivate the team to play better (unforced turnovers hurt the Explorers as well).

Ruben Guillandeaux and Yves Mbala combined to shoot 0 for 10 for zero points. Some of that had to do with the poor officiating and some was because of sloppy play. Darnell Harris (16 points) was being double teamed in the second half and was only able to score 2 points in the half. Jerrell Williams (12 points, 5 boards) is one who leads by example. Kimmani Barrett (11 points, 6 boards) played well offensively in the loss. Villanova 71, LaSalle 58 FINAL.

The Explorers head to the Sunshine State to play Florida State on Saturday.

Officials: Mike Roberts,
